I understand the students are angered by Paterno's firing, but what I find so obscene is the response to their rioting last week: zero arrests! In the same week, a day apart I think, Berkeley students assembled, as is their constitutional right, to portest fee hikes, I think. There were mass beatings and arrests. A day later, or the same day, London students demonstrated against the tripling of their tuition fees. They were confronted by an unprecedented number of riot police, with rubber bullets waiting in the wing to be used for the first time in London protest history. But the Penn State jocks riot, throw bottles at the heads of journalists, push a press van over on its side, and the police response is completley opposite to the treatment of the students who are legally and peacefully demonstrating their grievances. This goes back to '60s dislike of "freaks" over "jocks". Cops love "jocks" and hate "freaks". Afterall, a cop is just a jock with a badge, baton, bullets and a gun. --------------------- |
