I think the director was George Stevens who also did "Giant" a few years after "Shane", and "A Place in the Sun", just a few years before "Shane". I saw it as a child in Tehran where the film was dubbed into the local Jahel hoodlum dialect, which made "Shane" and all the other Westerns the only genre watched by the street gangs of South Tehran and the wannabes in Central and North Tehran. I remember the rich color and wide shots of the frontier. I'm sure you know that the Gangster genre is directly linked to the Western, and the Western is linked to Greek Tragedies. Now that you brought it up, I think I may rent and watch it again this weekend.
