My grandfather served as doctor in the army of Agha Poutrous and then ran for his life with his young family to Iraq when the British got what they wanted...when the Brits came to Iraq in the 20s he was approached by "nationalists" who assured him that THIS time the British wouldn't "betray us"....he warned them not to fall for it again, he told them that the reality was that they were now part of a new country with many doors open to them and they should resolve to become good Iraqi citizens and grow with the country.....those who refused were the ones to follow the pipe dream into Syria from where they were chased out by the French only to stumble into a fight with the Iraqi army which did not appreciate a band of refugees crossing borders at will while armed...which led directly to the "lesson" of Semele....but we take responsibility for nothing...we are always being "persecuted" for just being "good Christians".

because of their actions and more of the same from the followers of the Patriarch, the Iraqi government cracked down on Assyrians and forbade them from receiving education or advancing in any relevant way...instead they remained porters, drivers and, if lucky, owners of trucks....and that was it.

We condemned generations of our own young people to menial lives filled with ignorance and bitterness and no hope for a brighter future, which our despicable clergy manipulated nicely into a love of martyrdom as a sign of God's "favor"...and there we stayed.

And these modern nationalists are still at the same game, only they've made sure to leave Iraq and shout defiance from a safe distance while causing misery for those brave enough or desperate enough to stay behind....their grand strategy is to get as many of them killed, by Muslims, as they can thereby increasing the "pity factor" wherein Europe will be "alarmed" at what they are suffering and rush to their rescue...as if they were exotic fish or pets.

...what a glorious end to the Assyrians!
