I grew up with Turks in Germany and whenever I would tell them I was Assyrian, they would say "aha Suryani" and that's what they know us as. And the Suryoye from Turkey that we knew identified as such or "Syrian Orthodox" and "Oromoye"(Aramean) in their language. Aprim makes a big deal because some of the Suryoye call themselves Assyrian but what he doesn't mention is that's recent as well. In Arabic, the name for Assyrians is "Ashuri" but Iraqis usually call these Christians "Athuri" and they've been crying about wanting it changed even though these heroes do not call themselves L"Ashuraye" in their own language but "Aturaye" or "suraye". --------------------- |
