I can only think of sexual repression and Sado/Masochism when I hear these things. I knew a girl who grew up in a very strict Catholic household and the repression under which she was raised conversely found its catharsis and gratification when she became a dominatrix and began taking pleasure in dominating men in twisted acts of sexual submission. Beside making money doing this, she fell addicted to the act and used it as a means to cleanse herself from her rigorous, religious past by using it as ritual, or a self-made religion, in which she felt she had a choice and was in the dominant position. As bizare as this may sound, I see it playing upon the same instincts as those of religion, like this guy crucifying himself, or the Shiah's in South of Tehran chaining themselves for Imam Hussein screaming and crying: "Ya Abolfaz!"
