Even radical anti Shias such as ibn taymiya never actually committed any violence against them and he didn't consider them Muslim. Even the modern salafis have different groups among them and most of them do not calling for any violence. In fact I remember a salafi mosque I used to go to where they didn't believe in even fighting against your government even if oppressive. The mosque ended up splitting up over this. Real salafis are harsh in speech but soft for the most part. There were some battles between Sunni and Shia militias but they were small and only between soldiers. The ottoman empire didn't even differentiate between the two and all the top scholars of major Islamic universities do not support violence against them. Most of the fighting in Iraq between the two is recent and stirred up by the U.S.. it is no where close to how Christians have dealt with each other. Having disagreements doesn't mean they have been killing every one. --------------------- |
