When all is said and done. Whether there is any definitive proof of our modern identity or not, let’s say it’s enough just to believe you’re Assyrian to justify making demands for a country or special rights or guarantees or promises of security. The entire nationalist position that a separate country or autonomous region is owed them depends on one thing; the claim that Christian Assyrians need their own territory because they have been and are being persecuted, massacred, martyred and denied elemental civic, human, religious and ethnic rights by Islam/Arabs.

Now for a reality check. Who in history has not “suffered”? Is the Christian Assyrian “plight” something rare…something unheard of…something which the world has never tolerated before when others have suffered it…is it something the world has moved to rectify before? Knowing as we now do that the entire war against Iraq was based on lies making it as illegal as the Nazi invasion of Poland and worse…have the Iraqi people, suffering far greater today than anything modern Assyrians have experienced received any sympathy from the world or apologies or guarantees etc?..or are more funds being voted by the week to continue this war of aggression?

In other words; what makes Christian Assyrian claims deserve anything more than Iraq’s trampled rights and sovereignty can command?

But let that all slide and instead let’s see where and when the “genocide”, massacre, martyrdom, denial of identity etc have occurred. My position is simply that Christian Assyrians have suffered nothing more than the consequences from the illegal and disruptive actions engaged in by some, for which all have suffered…and this has only occurred because the Assyrian identity has been used as a front to justify acts of sedition and betrayal committed by a Christian minority who’ve claimed extreme duress from persecution by Muslims. And that the normal and, at times, extreme reactions of an admittedly harassed Iraqi government which has not known a moment’s peace since the West first began meddling in its affairs, have been used by these same Christians as proof that Muslims are “out to persecute Christian Assyrians”, because “that’s just the way Islam is and always has been”…hence the need for a territory they can govern where they will be safe from Muslim dominance etc.

My effort is to show that nothing of the kind has taken place…not 1,300 years ago, not in the First World War, not in Semele(a tragedy to be sure) and not today….in fact; never. The Christian Assyrians have suffered governmental and citizen retaliation, no one denies that…but this has been brought on largely as a reaction to their own intemperate actions…something any minority would have suffered anywhere it did similar things(the Native Americans for instance, as well as the Basques of Spain and Catholics of Ireland to name a few). Retaliation against them has been severe at times, but this was due to the time and place and not any inherent cruelty in Islam…and has been no more than countless people have suffered equally.

For instance the 750,000 Christians we claim were “massacred” by Turkey have more than been matched by the 700,000 plus Iraqi children, under the age of five, who were starved to death or died from easily preventable diseases due to the direct actions of foreign Christian nations over a thirteen year period. And that’s not counting all those children over five plus their families etc. If the world isn’t moved to rectify or even stop the more recent “massacre” of Iraqi children going on right now under it’s nose…why does anyone expect special attention or compensation or apology for acts, committed during wartime, over 80 years ago?

The entire case of the nationalists rests upon proving they’ve been the subjects of genocide, massacres, martyrdoms etc. Let’s consider their evidence, rationally.
