I remember visiting Lalish temple with Rabbi Yaco in Easter 2002.
Before we entered their beautiful temple we were told by our bodyguards not to ever mention the Syriac word for devil, Satana as they considered it an insult to their beliefs.
They told us they worshipped the god Tauz, represented by the peacock which adorned a temple wall.
As we entered the beautiful temple a gnarled tree hundreds of years old was in the courtyard and along the entrance appeared a long serpent leading to a dark interior where we took off our shoes and respectfully entered.
We were told not to step on any of the foundation 7 beamsthat lay across the floor of the temple as each was said to represent a saint.
As we entered deeper into the darkened temple we saw darkened rooms filled with what appeared to be chandeliers and vats of oil which had been donated by Yezidi believers.
It suddenley dawned on me that these people appeared to be worshipping for the ancient Dammuzi/Tammuz god of fertility. The Tauz appeared to have been a corruption of Tammuz and the temple with its 7 pillars appeared to represent the entrance to the netherworld where at each of the 7 gates ishtar was sadi to remove an item of clothing.
Somehow over the years the Yezidi had mixed our ancient Sumerian/Babylonian religious beliefs with Christianity, Islam and Zoroastrian practices and beliefs to come up with a unique amalgam of them all.
It was like stepping back in time.

But it still didn't make them Assyrian, a modern nationalistic name applied to a sect of Christian Iraqis.
