I’ve never understood this notion. I can understand showing forbearance and patience, forgiveness even in the face of aggression, AFTER it has stopped. I’m sure that the Iraqis will forgive one day, as the Vietnamese did…but not while the crimes are being committed. I’m convinced Jesus said something like that…and just as convinced that it was Constantine and his hirelings who came up with the idea of loving the Roman Emperor, turning your other cheek to him as he slapped, kicked and murdered you.

Rather than submit to a second outrage, if you’ve done nothing to deserve a slap in the first place…and as returning the same slap doesn’t send the needed message that he who begins a fight while unprovoked by the other is lacking in enough sense to benefit from “equal treatment”, one should rain such a series of blows on the fool who struck you for nothing as might penetrate such an obviously fat head.

Do not do unto others as they haven’t the sense not to do unto you, do more… kick their arses around the block so they’ll think harder the next time. Never turn your cheek when you know it is expected of you…rather smack that person’s cheek several more times…as many as the fool asked for, so we can have some justice in the land for widows and orphans.

Extend courtesy by all means…if it is understood, accepted and appreciated. If it is not, then send the kind of message such an obtuse person can understand…you owe it to a fellow creature to seek its improvement.

And so it is with this creature Maggie. As long as we were, even marginally, discussing a book, its author and the ideas therein, one could overlook passionate debate that sometimes slips overboard…because feelings run high. That’s perfectly acceptable….humor and sarcasm, if there is substance as well, can be delightful and add to the spice of the whole thing. But, after a string of insults and petty demonstrations, repeating one line while greeting every new idea as cause for mayhem and not exploration…with nothing more than epithets hurled at a completely unoffending man simply because you don’t know how to shoot his ideas down, if you feel the need, so want to shoot him instead…carried on in an increasingly shrill tone and manner…well, a merely “equal” response won’t do and besides, who wants to equal Maggie’s performance?

When Maggie shows she hasn’t the common sense, intellectual depth, intestinal fortitude or decency to carry on a serious discussion then Maggie needs to be put to bed. And if she won’t go to bed unless she’s smacked by a cement truck, then by all means, run her over. You owe it to her improvement, for no one should be so neglected or allowed to remain an embarrassment to themselves.

That was what Jesus meant…I believe. And I feel nothing but calm beatitude in having behaved in such a Christian manner, for once in my heathenish existence.
