..."When no one else has to?"

...you often hear this, said rather indignantly, followed by, "the Greeks or French or Italians(or whoever), don`t have to prove who they are...why only us?"

Here`s an example of what Iraqis, living outside of Iraq and wishing to vote in the upcoming elections, have to do to PROVE they are Iraqis....

Eligibility for the Iraqi Elections

Eligible voters need to provide information to prove their Iraqi identity and be born on or before January 31, 1992. Please bring two (2) official documents, with one having your recent picture.

These documents prove you are eligible for voting:

Iraqi original documents:
a. Civil identification card
b. Iraqi Nationality Certificate
c. Iraqi passport (G)
d. Daftar Al-Nifoos Al-Iraqi
Foreign documents:
a. Refugee certificate issued by the United Nations
b. Certificate issued by the Red Cross
c. Foreign passport
These documents prove part of eligibility and need another document to supplement the rest of the eligibility condition. If you can't prove you are Iraqi, please bring any documents that prove your father is/was an Iraqi citizen.

Iraqi documents:
a. Iraqi passport (M-A-S-H-N) that proves ID, age and nationality
b. Ration Card
Foreign documents to prove ID, age and nationality:
a. Resident document in the foreign country
b. Drivers License card
c. Personal ID card
d. Foreign Passport

...you can brag to your friends all day and all night that you are Iraqi....or French, or even Assyrian. No one cares and nothing is at stake....but, if you want to do anything important, significant, official, you indeed have to have proof. And no, no one, has any kind of officially sanctioned or acceptable, documented, proof that they are Assyrian...or Chaldean. The world is supposed to take their word for it, and turn over the homes of other people and vast resources to them....just because they say so. If you have to prove you are Iraqi, with official documents, then you certainly have to provide the same if you say you are Assyrian....speaking Arabic will not make you Iraqi and so on and so forth.

And I seriously doubt any Christian from Iraq is going to INSIST that he is not Iraqi but Assyrian, "goddamn it"!, and refuse to provide proof that he is IRAQI. No one is asking, no one has EVER asked for proof we are Assyrians for the simple reason that no such evidence exists, anywhere, but in our own fevered minds.
