The tradition of plural marriage existed before Islam among the Arabs…as it did among the Jews. Muhammad tried to modify it in favor of women. Christianity, on the famous other hand, believed strongly in the coming end of the world, within the lifetime of Jesus or soon after his murder. Not only did it do away with plural marriage but frowned on any kind of marriage, praising eternal chastity instead which was no way to grow a community(something the Church fathers eventually realized)…or raising children or engaging in worldly affairs…rather people were to divest themselves of all earthly goods and cares in preparation for the End. Judaism and Islam both preached the End of Days but not with the conviction of Christians that it was about to arrive. The custom of marrying many wives was an established norm in the MidEast whose harshness towards women Muhammad sought to ameliorate.

“Islam did not outlaw the practice of plural marriage, but it modified and restricted it greatly. In Arabia before Islam, there were no agreed-upon rules concerning plural marriage. Islam applied the following rules:

A man will be held accountable to God if he does treat each wife equally in all respects to affection and well-being.
A man is counseled to have only one wife, as this is better for him.
A man cannot marry more than four wives(this stipulation was revealed after the last of Muhammad’s marriages.)
No woman can be forced into marriage against her will, and the authorities can annul any marriage that is forced. (This regulation was quite an advancement for women in a society where they were used to having no say in whom they married.)”

Of course Christians had mistresses, concubines and prostitutes at every turn and in the process dishonored their wives.

A further comment:

“The Quran enshrined a new status for women and gave them rights that they could have only dreamed of before in Arabia, so why the seeming disparity between what once was and what now appears to be? The answer lies in the deterioration of basic Islamic education that occurred in the Muslim world after the disasters of the Mongol invasions and the Crusades of the eleventh through thirteenth centuries. The Mongols laid waste to half the Muslim world and forbade the practice of Islam among their conquered subjects for a hundred years, and the Crusades decimated the Muslim heartlands of Palestine and Syria, leading to a void of great learning centers. Cultures that arose since that time have been characterized by customs and local cultural leanings more than genuine Islamic values.”

That makes a lot of sense and explains how the most advanced and refined civilization of the Middle Ages, far beyond anything in the Christian West, has come to be dominated by the kinds of hillbillies waiting to take over America under the leadership of Bush and Pat Robertson. Illiterate Islamic fundamentalists took over Islam long ago…as their Christian counterparts are eager to redefine Christianity today.
