...I am familiar with many of the names you mentioned....but I have to say that a comment I read years ago, though exaggerated for effect, still struck me as having truth at its core...it was, "NO ONE likes jazz".

...what I understood, which I always felt instinctively, was that "loving" jazz was a white man's way of "liking" something Black, while still keeping them in their place. I have no doubt that jazz musicians get totally wraped up in the moment, but that gawky white kids, or cool wannabes really like OR "get it", sorry...never bought it.

...the most irritating thing about Terry Gross's program on NPR is her "love affair" with jazz and jazz musicians...my blood runs cold when she announces an interview with yet another "sideboard man" anyone could really give a shit about...and the music reviewer is even worse...come across as an art critic belaboring the English language, painfully shoving and stretching words into some semblance of commentary...and no, I CAN'T tell the difference between on riff and another, and I doubt 98% of people can....one look at Terry Gross, her incredible translucence and I understood full-well her "love" of jazz...it makes her right cheek twitch, slightly...and to her, that's a LOT! Love her every other way...but get OFF the "side men" and "slide men" and the rest.

...to me jazz musicians lead the way down a rabbit hole and I get tired very quickly following behind.

...BB King...now THERE"S classic jazz and everything else!
