I just re-read Tropic not more than two weeks ago. I didn't like Miller when I first tried him years back...only because Anais praised him so highly as the only true Surrealist did I bother again...and I liked him well enough though I now remember I liked stories in Black Spring better...but I found I had little patience for him this time around....Orwell's essay "Inside the Whale" about Miller's first book, Tropic of Cancer, gives good insight into why I might have outgrown Miller....he was very much of THAT time, like DH Lawrence, whose books I loved...maybe you have to come out of a repressed culture and background to get the "lift" that comes from reading those books...but later, if you've liberated your insides, those ideas are not as appealing, or even relevant....maybe it goes back to Krishnamurti's point, and a paraphrase..."write your own book".

However, one must never forget how important those books were in ones development, even if a bit shopworn years later....honor your teachers even as you move on....a good teacher WANTS you to move on.
