...in pinpointing what makes Christianity a distinct and unique religion we have to search for those teachings which are exclusive to it and no other religion....else who needs it, if the others will do just as well?

What makes Christianity "Christianity"?

It can't be "love" or "self-sacrifice" or being good to your parents, not stealing or killing etc. Christianity shares these teachings with hundreds of other religions. On close scrutiny the only thing, besides a promise of paradise (which other religions also share) is the notion of vicarious salvation or redemption. That is exclusive to Christianity and only Christianity. No other modern religion extols human sacrifice and the idea of punishing an Innocent in your place, for your sins and crimes...this is truly "Christian". The added detail about you eating his flesh and drinking his blood...well, that's just the cherry on top.

Is this a moral teaching? Is it something you would teach your child if it was NOT "mandated" by God?

Your child Scott, has just been found to be behind a string of crimes committed at his school...it turns out that he was the one who raped a fellow student, a boy no less( so that's TWO sins for one)...stole from his teachers and burned down the gym....he is caught red-handed in yet another crime and admits to all the rest, and is brought to the principal's office and his parents called in.

"What are we to do with you"? The principal asks" "There is nothing TO do but the usual in these cases", says the priest, who's been called in to consult.

So the adults march off to the cafeteria where the rest of the students are eating lunch...and from the student body they choose the MOST innocent kid they can find, in this case Barney Threeeyes, a science major and president of the chess club. Barney is dragged out of the cafeteria and hauled off to jail thereby "saving" your son Scott. Scott is, of course, very grateful to Barney, he weeps for him and "laments mightily" but all the same he's as relieved as can be that Barney was sent down to save Scott from having to pay for his own crimes. And every year, at Barney's birthday Scott gets a lot of presents from his parents who are also extremely grateful to Barney for his sacrifice.

This is Christian morality...this idea that someone totally innocent of ANY crime can be made to pay for yours and this "washes" YOU clean...this is unique to Christianity...it is what makes it tick, what gives it mass appeal...and why not?

But is it moral, as a Cannibal would understand morals?
