,,,,,How gaga we all were when they came out with that study which purported to be able to tell where your ancestors came from....even well-educated assyrians believed that this was the magic miracle which would prove once and for all that they were truly Assyrian, connected to the ancients. No one read the fine print, or if they did, understood it.

In the first place the study could only go back 500 years. It was intended to show whites, who are a mixture of "ethnic" backgrounds, such as French-Irish-German etc. where their ancestors hailed from along the way, for the last 500 years. It was useful to those who couldn't know if they derived from Germany first.....or France....or Spain and how much of each along the way they picked up.

What we dummies heard was that this study could prove we were real ASSYRIANS, tracing us back to ASSYRIA. The first problem is that there was no Assyria 500 years ago...there was a province of the Ottoman Empire where Iraq is today...besides we already KNEW, more than likely, we came from that general area 500 years ago.....we didn't need Stanford University to tell us that...what this study could tell us was if any ancestors came from Russia....or India or something, during those 500 years....but telling us we came from Mesopotamia was no help....we KNEW that already.

Besides, LOTS of people come from that region...Arabs, Jews, Persians, Yezidis, Hottentots....to know your great-great-great-whatever came from downtown Baghdad, or Nineveh 500 years ago did not PROVE he was "pure Assyrian", or ANY Assyrian! To do that we would need DNA samples from Ashurbanipal.

But, so desperate are we to prove our claims that even the wisest among us who should know better only hear what we want to hear.
