Watching well-meaning Muslims trying to defend Islam is painful....they shouldn't even try...not only because no religion can be defended, as they're all silly and dangerous...but they fall into the trap set for them by Harris and the rest...as the Muslim apologist is apologizing or trying to put the best face on it, you can see in Harris' eye (Harris especially) that he already has a deadly zinger ready and waiting...his eyes are watering at the mouth...and sure enough, when his turn comes it 's very easy to show that the Muslim apologist has been cherry-picking, just as the Christian will do.

The thing to do, against Harris and the rest, is to point out that what the Islam antagonist is really doing is providing cover for political wars and actions against people who just HAPPEN to be Muslim..as they just HAPPEN to sit on a shitload of oil.

Also point out that this tactic is no different than the one used against Jews for centuries....blame the religion for YOUR acts of violence against the people of that faith.

There is no need to even bother justifying Islam, in such debates...instead turn the tables on Hitchens by pointing out the similarity between what he is doing and what other, also "genius" Christian apologists or Jew-haters, did with their "criticisms" of Judaism....put Christianity in the hot seat...it's easy to do.

Concede the point that Islam may indeed be as bad as your antagonist claims, but tell him that is not the real issue here...the real issue is that people, mostly Christian or from Christian cultures, are once again bashing a religion as their pretext for abusing the people of that religion....they are helping to spread fear and hatred against Muslims, for political reasons, as they once did against Jews....then you can shift the discussion to why Christians seem prone to doing such things...and have fun.
