A NEAR century-old dispute has flared in Bonnyrigg, with a plaque accusing Ottoman Turks of genocide surreptitiously attached to the back of a new monument.

Construction of the memorial had been the subject of intense debate, with the Foreign Affairs Minister, Stephen Smith, the Turkish consul general and a number of Australians of Turkish ancestry all opposed to the project.

At issue is a 95-year-old dispute between Turks and Assyrians over who was responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Assyrians during World War I.

Fairfield Council approved the sculpture on the condition that no particular community was mentioned on any signs.

The plaque on the front of the memorial abides by that, noting: ''This memorial is dedicated to the victims of the Assyrian genocide (Seyfo) in WW1 1914-1918, Simele massacre 1933 and onwards.''

But a second plaque said: ''During WW1 (1914-1918) they were exposed to the worst kind of extermination and genocide by the Ottoman Turks.''

Hermiz Shahen, a spokesman for the Assyrian Universal Alliance, which built the memorial, said the second plaque was an ''informational note'' attached to the sculpture for only a few hours after it was unveiled last Saturday to give some historical background.

''I am very proud that we put that note and everybody should know about genocide but no one will talk about it,'' Mr Shahen said.

The Turkish consul general to Sydney, Renan Sekeroglu, said the monument had ''angered and disillusioned the 150,000 Turkish Australians''.

A Fairfield councillor who supported the monument, Mr Anwar Khoshaba, said he did not agree with the second plaque, ''and if they try again, I guarantee you they are going to end up in court''.

...they won´t try again....such despicable "courage" is typical of these people...to sneak your "history" in and then sneak it out before you get into trouble....what a nayshun!
