...when I said to someone that wars make money he replied that was ridiculous because "it costs us so much to wage war and we get no treasure or gold or plunder from it". He was thinking of wars in the 12th century. While the country may go broke funding wars, individual warmongers make zillions...the treasure comes not from the losers but from our own Treasury.

Now we are being told there is no money for medicine and hospitals and schools and we have to cut back and balance our budget...no one was asking where the money for the Iraq war was to come from...and that's the beauty of "terror" and wars that never end.

You might think that as long as a country is borrowing, why not borrow for schools and roads and bridges too...why only for destruction which never benefits most of the people? It is true that contractors and carpenters and all sorts of civilian/worker "soldiers" would reap the rewards of a massive infrasturcture building program..and teachers from serious funding from schools etc., and the entire country from development and opportunity, you could never get these funded through the same kinds of loans that fund wars because there is no immediate THREAT to the nation.

...certainly there is long range damage and weakening from a weakened economy and lack of opportunity...but it isn't as dire as yelling ISLAMOTERRORIST!!! That really gets people's attention and gets them blubbering and borrowing....warmongers know damn well they can scare people with terror alerts where they can't with "bad bridges" alerts...or "weak schools" alerts.

You have to scare people good in the here and now....they won't listen or borrow for anything else...even though we face far more danger from a collapsing country than we do from any Muslim or Martian.

We'll spend ourselves broke, not have money for our kids or grandparents, but we will spend like a drunken sailor to keep us "safe". Safe for what? So we can be around to safely and securely watch our long slow decline?
