Hi people,

The main problems we face are at Woomera, which is in the state of Western Australia.

Around 90% of the asylum seekers from Iraq are Christian Assyrians.

Many have sewn their lips together and gone on hunger strikes. Some have drunk poison in an attempt to committ suicide.

An unaccompanied 16 year old Iraqi boy was found hanging from a ceiling and was saved.

In Villawood we have around 18 Assyrians and Marybinong holds 9.

At Marybinong the Iraqi asylum seekers are ALL Assyrian.

We visited 7 of our 9 detainees on Monday.
We had to pass through extensive security and metal detectors before we were allowed entry.
I was even forced to take off my belt before passing through the metal detector.

After meeting with them we found out that many were from Duhok and Zakho.
They told us of their plight and how they arrived in Australia.
There was a 16 year old girl named Nebras Rasha who appeared very sad.

I gave her a "Free the Refugees' postcard I had smuggled in and that appeared to cheer her up.
I also handed out little leaflets telling them of the nationwide protest on Saturday.
Meanwhile Sennacherib Warda took all their names and has already begun to contact refugee legal advisors in the hope of getting them out.

They appeared alot happier after we had left and we promised we'd visit them next Sunday.

Our people at Marybinong were not involved in any lip sewing, hunger strikes or attempts of suicide.

Back soon,
David
