We are all humans Jeff, and this is a humanitarian issue. Period.
Explain to our people that asking for peace is not a political act, explain to them that asking for the release of asylum seekers is not a political act.
Explain that religious figures who's jobs are purely religious, and who speak up against the war are not being political they are being human and trying to resolve a humantarian issue.
Potray strong leadership Jeff. If you are committed to something you'll do it by yourself if necessary, but your example will stir others to follow eventually.
You can do anything.
