I also doubt that Assyrians knew anything about continents. But they apparently did understand symmetry very well. A bull with 4 legs would look asymmetrical from the front view, if all 4 legs were to be seen from the side view. The solution, add a fifth leg and you have a symmetrical front view. Pretty smart if you ask me.
