Even if it was a doctored image, it speaks a lot for the people who doctored it. Whether or not it is true, there are a lot of really horrible people who really do say & think things like that in the States. I remember seeing some of the ugly messages soldiers had written on the missiles they were about to use - it was on a news website a while ago....
Once, in undergrad, during the Desert Fox bombing spree, some guy sent out a campus-wide email with a joke about raping Iraqi women. It completely shook me. How can anyone even *joke* about that??? He was some right-wing idiot, judging by the joke & some other stupid things he said.... Anyway, I wrote a campus-wide email response to him, telling him how disgusted I was at that joke & what it meant to me, a girl with Iraqi heritage. It was surprising, but when he responded with some profanities in another campus-wide email, my friends & some people I didn't even know were responding back to him, defending my side.... So, there are some really ugly people out there, mixed in with all the good folk.
