: Quick question: Were you raised down south? Any particular reason why you chose to go to graduate school in Tenn.? Just curious.

xxx Yes, I was raised in the "south." I wanted to go to UT Austin for chemistry (grad program) & because a friend of mine from undergrad wanted me to join his band (violin), but even after I was accepted, I decided to go to Vanderbilt instead - my dad has severe asthma & my mom has high blood pressure attacks, & since my sister was (she's my only sibling) up north for undergrad, I was the only one here to take care of my parents if & when they might need it. & they like having me around. Vanderbilt's the hospital my dad visits for allergy appointments & also where my mom sees a cardiologist. Nashville's alright - I'm not one that's big on clubbing, but there're a lot of hiking spots around here, the weather's nice most of the year, & my sister's coming to med school here next fall - I'm looking forward to having her around - so it's not that bad for me... even though the Austin scene was AMAZING (that's where my parents met in the '70's - at UT Austin - my mom doing a post doc in theoretical physics & my dad finishing his PhD in aerospace engineering).

So, did you learn how to cook like your mother? My dad has taught me some of his recipes... & my mom - well she's Finnish, so if you like smelts & cabbage soup (ugh)... basically, we made a request as a family that she only bake & never cook. :P
