Lauren Bacal said the studios took advantage of him, that he never made
the kind of money he could have because they all knew he would only take
the roles he wanted. He did duplicate the role of Rick a few
times....but later when the studios knew they had a script he would
want...they didn't pay him what he deserved.
His part of Captain Queeg is masterful...foreshadowed Richard "Tricky
Dick" Nixon to the hairs on his arse. And this type of martinet rules
over us yet...captures our two bit attention like no other...we all
adore strong heroes in fiction...but give us a mealy mouthed coward to
lead us every time...his example is so much easier to endure...next to
him, we can feel justifiably GRAT.
