What Durant stunned me with, was that the English deposed their king and chopped off his head 150 years before the French made such a to do over killing their own king. We can thank magna Charta and Henry for that...because the Barons of England distanced themselves from the crown...opposed themselves to it and created the seeds for a parliament...they created a system whereby their kings were beholden to the Lords...then came the Commons. The French nobility by contrast identified themselves with the King's interests, never seriously opposed the royal will, held on to the bitter end...and went down in flames with him.

Very civilized of the Brits.
