Here is one reason why RI remembers "VJ Day."
-----------------------
"...[M]any veterans from Rhode Island, the site of a major naval base, were sent to the Pacific War, and a proportionally larger number of Rhode Islanders died in World War II than residents of other states. Furthermore, local veterans organizations wield considerable political power. This influence has brought hiring preferences, modest tax breaks, and even special license plates for veterans. In addition, perhaps the social lives of more Rhode Island veterans, especially the seniors, revolve around their local lodges, chapter headquarters, and legion halls, which are active in organizing more frequent military parades than are held in other states."
