One of the oddest and yet most appealing things, to believers, is that religion has to be irrational by definition. How handy. Wouldn't it be great if Medicine or anything else we need operated on that principle.

You could see Andy, our resident voodoo priest for a season valiantly give it a shot, trying to sound for all the world like anyting he said made sense but when he got pushed too far to the wall he'd end it all with saying..."it's a matter of Faith and you ain't got none". Being irrational they of course have an irrational definition of faith...which is close to being impossible to define anyway...but give it to a cannibal to define and you've lost all hope of being even minimally comprehensible...so ridiculous is an irrational person's definition of the irrational. Imagine, if you can, "irrational to the second power".

Cheney, or one of those idiots, was quoted as saying WMDs could still be in Iraq. See...he has Faith. This is the residual damage from believing things BECAUSE they are so damn ridiculous they MUST BE TRUE! Cheney BELIEVES...with all his fervent little head that there is really a heaven and all the rest of it. Having gone three-quarters of the way to Bedlam, what's the surprise if he also believes there are WMDs in Iraq? What does it matter that the probability is zero...it is still POSSIBLE! Ain't faith a wonderful thing?

As irratonal as faith in general may seem, still it's grounded in this world, on probabilities rather than possibilities, for anything in or out of the world is technically possible. But seemingly irrational probablities, such as hoping for Andy's reformation, can and should make "sense". But where is there any sense at all in believing what five Jew fishermen said 2000 years ago about something impossible they claim they witnessed, when no one you know ever talked to them or can prove they even existed...whose only basis in "fact" is that every chump back to Adam wants to believe he can cheat death? I mean the Jews and Christians haven't even advanced beyond Gilgamesh who learned true wisdom when he decided to love his family, be a good neighbor and let heaven go to hell for all the good it did anybody to ask those really "Big" and really stupid questions no one can answer without turning him or herself inside out and backwards and STILL canīt.
