CONVERTING TO ISLAM

[ Beth Suryoyo Assyrian (Othuroyo) Forum ]

Written by parhad on 01 Jan 2001 07:05:50:

For the new year I'm going to turn Muslim. It isn't that I haven't enjoyed being a very poor Christian. It's just that I see more benefit to being Assyrian if I become a tepid Moslem. I'll still stay Assyrian. I don't think anyone, anywhere will try to get me to convert. Convert to what, an Italian, an Egyptian? Or have we been so brainwashed that we think you HAVE to be Christian in order to be Assyrian.

I wonder how much of Saddam's reported hostitlity towards Assyrians has to do with their constantly badgering him about their religion. If we've made being Christian synonymous with being Assyrian, then no wonder he was trying to make Assyrian history Arab history. he was fighting back because we were making Assyrian history Christian history. It was a foolish thing to do but I can understand why he wanted to do it. You would too.

When have we ever bragged that we were the FIRST Assyrians. I don't hear us mentioning it anywhere, anywhere where it could do us some good. Yet we never tire of proclaiming to the world that we were among the very first Christians. Can't anyone out there see what we've done in our reputed attempts to "honor" our heritage? We don't emphasize our heritage at all, we only talk up the religious part and all the things we've suffered because of it. Well I say, let it go. Come back to being Assyrian and let's see if we can't get those in power in our homelands to let us develop and make that heritage, which they now also share (They're in our country), strong and prosperous. When we die we'll benefit from whatever is up there, but while we live let's get some good out of, and do some good for, this diminishing heritage of ours. each of us admits that we worry for our children, how easily we're losing them, here, to pop culture, over there to persecution and neglet. Is that the kind of nationalists we have? The same kind as the naturalists who want enough clean air and water for themselves but screw the grandkids. Is it enough for you to be proud Assyrians in your lifetimes while you watch your children grow hardware and shave their heads?

Once I've converted I think I'll go back to Iraq and work with the government to protect and promote our Assyrian heritage. I might work in the antiquities department at the museums. I might get a grant to set up a cultural center, make a film, publish stories, set up a professional dance group, a travelling theatre, a childrens theatre. You know...that thing called CULTURE. Look what the Persians and the Kurds are doing in cinema...do you realize how many many many stories we have to tell, and how the world would respond?? Why, Disney might even do Gilgamesh. Think of the characters, the sets and drawings, the locations. What a rich treasure just waiting. Maybe a Jew will sponsor a Moslem filmaker to do it. And on a Sunday, someday, after church, you'll take your little Sargon and Nini to see it. And you'll feel smug and satisfied because at least YOU ARE A CHRISTIAN.

We haven't had a culture for hundreds of years. Some lone individuals here and there have managed to write something or create something, but where was the audience for it. The sad part of it is that we wont even have much of an audience for church in a while. Then the revenge will be complete: we'll have spent two thousand years chasing our tails, only to find we lost the whole animal when we weren't looking.

I'm just bitter because I'm here all alone. No one wanted me at their party. Can't imagine why.

Parhad:

Some times you say things which suggest that most of your life you have been living on another plannet.

Historically any christian who has become Moslem has abondaned his or her culture and heritage. Most of the the socalled Arabs in Iraq are Christian Assyrians who converted into Islam. In the Middle east Religion has always been an important part of a people's nationality. Once one converts into Islam there is no reason for him or her not to intermarry and assimialte into the rullling society.

Saddam Hossain has killed, turtured and persecuted the (Moslem) Kurds and the (Moslem Sheites) just as oppressively as he has dealt with the Assyrians.

God, you'd try the patience of a saint. You mean the Moslems of Indonesia, the Sudan, Ethiopia, Egypt, Iran, Mongolia, Afghanistan are all Arabs. Arabs are from Arabia. People who speak Arabic aren't Arabs any more than people who speak Italian are Italians.

Do I have to keep saying it: When we converted we lost our Assyrian culture...we became CHRISTIAN...just as you claim everyone became Arab who became Moslem. But wait...that's not what you said. If you structure your logic (god help me) rightly, what you're really saying is that those who became a culture(Arab), HAD to become Moslem (a Religion)..or if they became Moslem (a Religion) then they automatically became Arab( a Culture). So that if you change one of them, you must conform to its partner, if you adopt a religion you must take its culture...I"VE GOT YOU THERE.

When we became Christian, according to you, it would have been impossible to remain Assyrian ( a culture), for we would have been forced to take the culture with the religion...just like all those people you mentioned who gave their culture up when they became Arab( By the way, most people became Moselm by choice...no one in America is forcing people to convert and Islam is the fastest growing religion here).

So, ipsipipsi, when we became Christian we took on a Christian culture and lost our own, like those poor Arabs of yours. Thank you, you've helped make it clearer.

Dear Mr Parhat:

You are not alone in your feelings and thoughts.People were living so long in a web of ignorance and not thinking, that truth can be somewhere else, that you shouldn't be surpriced.
People were told to believe, so they belived, what they were told. They didn't try to think. Why? It was so easy. Life was so simple.
We are told to die for our faith, so we die. The problem is, do we really die for truth.
If only Assyrians start to really search, they could find, what you have found.
I have found for myself, that God Ashur was a creator of mankind and Assyrians are his first sons.
Jesus has come to Jews as lost people. But what do we really know about his teaching? Once he says, love your mother and father and next, you will hate your mother and father. We are told every Sunday:"I have brought a sword to this world". What it means? Are there two different Jesuses? White and Black, like white and black magic?
There are so many questions.
Jewish,Christians and Muslims have the same roots, like CIA and KGB had the same mother,so why to fight?
I don't see a reason, why should Assyrian forget their true past.
I know, that in ancient times, there was too much magic, ocult, astrology and Assyrian were desived by all those things, but not all of them. It is why you and not only you have such feelings and thoughts.
I am so happy for you.

Did anything change after thousand years of history?
Nothing!!!
When we look around every day: press, books, movies, media, sects - ocult, magic, etc. ...!!!
As some professor said, holy does not mean good, it means strange.
He was right, but those who don't want us to know the truth ,took him out from the university and away from his students.
Who knows, that all prophets used drugs and it is why they had had visions?
There are so many things to talk and ask.

It was told, that in the end of world - times, people will open their eyes, they will understand.
I belive this time is coming or even has come already for some.

Shamiram,

I must say you are an interesting woman. I read the article you recommended some time back. I have to tell you I haven't yet begun to see the "powers" and "forces" behind things that you seem to. Maybe I will in time. People, agencies, certainly have hidden agendas, but I think most of them are too inept to actually pull something off. It isn't for lack of trying.

For instance I still don't understand how the Jews managed to get all of us believing that GOD said the things in their bible. I mean it is THEIR history book after all. So it was written in Aramaic and not Hebrew, so big deal? Aramaic was used everywhere, even in graffitti. Simply because they, and we, spoke the same language doesn't make that book have any use or value to us. There're hardly two lines strung togther which make a lot of sense, and what sense they do have, has been said by others and better. Only the Beatitudes and look what they did for us...how much more humble and humiliated do you want us to be, and how much more dirt do you want us to eat in this life?

The crowning irony is that Christians don't like or trust Jews, and that's putting it mildly, yet they've bought this salesjob hook, line and sinker. I'll bet Jews stay up nights wondering how they ever pulled it off, and having a good laugh too. I often thought the epic film about Jesus, starring Max Von Sydow, had a most unfortunate but apt title. It was called THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD.

So, I suppose it is possible to pull off some whoppers.

While Paul would admonish me to have some respect...I would make the same plea. For Ashur's sake how can you preach to me from a book which has so obviously lead to the weakening, to the slaughter and disenfranchisement of our people, and ask me to respect it. Assyrians thrill that they are mentioned in the book, once or twice. That Jeremiah used us as a scourge, a corrections officer, called on by Jehovah, to bring his darling Jews up short. OH great...My ancestors were available to be used by Jehovah. When he needed an executioner he called on us and we leapt at the chance to do his bidding. ARE YOU PEOPLE ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL OR WHAT. Has the smell of incense so clouded your reasoning, or is it that reason isn't welcome in your churches. No, "Fred, you poor benighted sot, it's a question of faith". Well have faith then...have some faith in your own people, your own history, your own moral teachings. Have faith in yourselves, stop fawning over converted Jews because they excuse your losses and failures in this life, while THEY and others go after the "goodies".

Can you imagine a people who BRAG about the number of holy mothers who all but held their childrens' throats for the knife of the butcher and are proud, PROUD, to have done so. This isn't piety it's accessory to murder, to the murder of your own children and heritage.

What's the use...the majority of the "true" Assyrians will be down on their knees, yet again, and loving every minute of it. Ashur wouldn't waste spit on people so debased. But even after all this, there is hope of our reformation. It comes from those who challenge these old ways and are willing to forge ahead. Remember, a Christian education well prepares us to deal with any crisis.........of the 12th century.

Go forth and wise-up.

parhad, chapter 1, verse 1, line 1.

Dear Mr Parhad:

Everyone has to be his own Cinderella: sit in the corner and put aside an ash and seeds. It is not an easy job to do. We can't count on miraculous help. It is our life, we are responsible for it.
We were robbed of free will and making choices based on fear.
Fear of your God!!!???
We have to overcome this fear forced by priests, rabbies and pastors and any one else. When we are not afraid of anything, we take the right path and will not be manipulated.

I hope I will have many more conclusions in the future.

Keep up your spirit and don't be discouraged by anyone.

Shamiram
