PROTESTING TOO LARGELY:
Erotic Science Proves Christ Right.

by Dean Worbois

Few words so clearly display the wisdom of Christ as the simple message we find in Matthew 7:2. Christ instructs, "For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again." Christ reinforced this message when he taught us to pray, "...and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us."

All systems go
Long before and ever since Christ, the truth of these words has been recognized. In Hamlet, Shakespeare argues, "The lady doth protest too much, methinks." Today science calls it 'projection,' the tendency to project on others the traits we most fear in ourselves. Slang just taunts, "It takes one to know one."

Spiritual awakening teaches us one thing about this truth: it is not abstract. Christ, Shakespeare and psychology are not speaking of some esoteric, pie-in-the-sky, future, here-cum-de-judge, after-you-die type deal. You don't have to wait. As you judge so you are judged. Here. Now. By every one. And by every thing. The Hindus of India call it 'karma.'

Scientific research has just given us an excellent example of this truth. The research is reported in the August 1996 Journal of Abnormal Psychology, published by the American Psychological Association. The research was conducted at the University of Georgia by Henry E. Adams, Lester W. Wright, Jr., and Bethany A. Lohr. The report is titled, 'Is Homophobia Associated With Homosexual Arousal?'

That's right, boys and girls. The scientists proved Christ was right by slapping pecker gauges on college men and showing them moving pictures of guys and gals doing things they wouldn't tell mom about. And gals and gals. And guys and guys.

It was a bit more scientific than that. The gauges were no ordinary touchy-feely calibration tool. They were the latest in pressure-sensitive circumference gauges. The volunteers were selected and categorized by respected, proven psychological tests. Only those volunteers reporting exclusively heterosexual arousal and experiences were chosen. There were 64 subjects, all Caucasian males. They were divided into homophobic and non homophobic groups depending on their scores on another proven test for indexing homophobia. And the volunteers were selected to find the truly phobic (when stimuli produces anxiety) and not those merely prejudiced against homosexuality based on intellectual processes like religion, social desirability, or legality.

Three films showed explicitly erotic acts between consenting adults, beginning with foreplay, including oral-genital contact, and ending in intercourse. Each film was four minutes and shown to the volunteer when he was alone. There was a period of rest between each film. The films were shown in different order to different volunteers.

The results were only interested in how much penile circumference changed during each film.

Don't point that thing if you're not going to use it.
Well, you guessed it. The gauges had practically the same amount of work when the men from both groups watched the guy/girl film. (The non homopobic group was 12% more aroused than the homophobic group.) And there wasn't much difference between the groups when watching lesbian sex (the homophobic group was 16% more aroused). The only time there was a "significant" difference between the arousal of the two groups was when they were watching the male homosexual video. When watching the guys go at it, neither group was as aroused as when they were watching women. But the homophobic group was 157% more aroused than the non homophobic group.

So, scientists have demonstrated homophobia is a function of homosexual arousal. But then, we knew that. How many of us spent our youth hiding behind unwarranted heterosexual bravado? How many times have we seen the parking lot punk throwing this week's taunts spend next week as an enlightened drinking buddy? How many times has the minister most vocal against sin been discovered nose high in sex, greed, and cruelty?

Yeah, we knew homophobics were hiding something. So did anyone who understands the words, "For with what judgment ye judge . . ."

Now it's our turn. How do we react to this research? "Yeah, those bastards! Throw the book at 'em. Pin 'em to the wall while I pick up rocks." Or do we react, "Oh, my brothers. I knew you were the same as I. And, by the way, nice pecker."

I pray to grow into a spirit who smiles.
