Just got off the telephone with Wardiya and Majdolin Yonan.

I asked Majdolin about her condition and told her that we are doing all we can to start a fund raising campaign in Australia.

At first they were both stunned that someone as far away as Australia had read the San Diego Tribune article and then taken the time to get their number and call to enquire and support them.

They told me how two of our people in San Diego who had heard of their plight had scrapped together the funds needed for the aeroplane tickets in order to fly them to the US for treatment.

They kept trying to thank me for calling them. They both stated that the fact that my thoughts were with them spoke louder than any money ever could.

Far from a sorrowful and weeping conversation both women kept expressing hope that things would improve. Majdolin's operation is next week and they are hopeful that some improvement can be made to her condition.

I felt so proud of both these women. Strong and resilient, yet sensitive and vulnerable at the same time.

I came away from the telephone conversation even more determined to help them in whatever way I could.

Besides, I am also partly responsible for what happened to them.
