One thing that many fail to see and analyze is the devastated “economic” conditions of Europe during the crusades. By advocating and conducting the crusades the Europeans achieved two major things. One: they enlisted all the poor and the unemployed and sent them to war, therefore, decreasing the threat of rebellions against the rich. Two: both parties, the enlisted men and the governments, took their share of the spoils of the war resulting in improved economic conditions throughout Europe. As far as I know, the same has been true for all the major wars in human history up to and including the one we see right now. Did anyone notice the jump in NASDAQ and NYSE right after the war with Iraq? Historically, economic contractions result in wars. The crusades were not about religion. --------------------- |
