Our ancient capital of Babylon was indeed one of the most cosmopolitan and advanced socities in history. The sight of such a multicultural society so shocked the Jews that in their racisim they fashioned a story and called it the Tower of Babel.
In their tall tale they depict what was obviously the high zigguart temple in ancient Babylon as a tower in which our ancestors would pray to Marduk and Nabu. With our ancestors being so accepting of all religions, languages and cultures, the Jews naturally made up the story of their god Yawheh.com coming down and "confounding" their language.
In fact ancient Babylon was the centre of the then world. It was simply such a cosmopolitan and diverse society that it attracted traders, students and tourists from all over the globe, each with the freedom to speak their own language, of course.
Ancient Babylon had many wonders that are only today being uncovered. Onlylast week I read about what is the first Museum in history at Babylon. The museum was so complete that it even had a model of the ancient city of Nabuchadenzzar's Babylon. It was this model that enabled German archaeologists to reconstruct an image of what the ancient city was like at its zenith. These same Germans then stole one of the most beautiful archaelogical pieces of the ancient world, the Ishtar gate.(no relation to Ms. Warda)
Today in downtown Melbourne where the largest concentration of Greeks outside of Athens is concentrated a sign is affixed to their cultursl centre which says, "Bring home the Elgin marbles."
My question is when will we begin to ask the German for the Ishtar gate, the British for Ashurbanipal's world-famous lion-hunt bas reliefs and the Americans for our winged lions?
