To the Age, This letter is in response to your article published on the 19th of October. http://theage.com.au/articles/2003/10/19/1066502056052.html The Taliban is defined by the online Encyclopaedia Britannica as; Persian T aleban (“Students”) , also spelled Taleban ultraconservative political and religious faction that emerged in Afghanistan in the mid 1990s following the withdrawal of Soviet troops, the collapse of Afghanistan's communist regime, and the subsequent breakdown in civil order. The faction took its name from its membership, which consisted largely of students trained in madrasah s (Islamic religious schools.) What becomes apparent from this definition and any other is that although the Taliban is also the fundamentalist Islamic regime in Afghanistan responsible for harbouring the terrorist Osama bin Laden and his terrorist group Al Quaeda. And although it is also one of the world's most extreme and radical Islamic organisations it is not a terrorist organisation. It may be responsible for harbouring terrorists, but it is not a terrorist organisation. Therefore the captured Australians such as Mamdouh Habib and David Hicks who were fighting alongside the Taliban were legitimate armed combatants defending the Taliban-led sovereign nation of Afghanistan against a legitimate US-led and Australian supported attack. Although it should be upsetting that the Geneva Convention that protects these combatants has been violated by the Bush government. What is truly upsetting is that newspapers such as the Age fail to do their most basic homework and rely on Bush's definition of "Good" vs. "Evil" to paint Mamdouh Habib and David Hicks as something that they are clearly not. Traitors deserving of a legal trial and appropriate sentence they may be. But they are clearly not terrorists. Regards, David Chibo Melbourne, Australia --------------------- |
