Habib family guests at Bush address

The Greens will protest against the detention of Australian Mamdouh Habib at Guantanamo Bay by choosing his family as their official guests for US President George Bush's address to Parliament.

After Labor leader Simon Crean appeared to thwart a move by his backbenchers to turn their backs during Mr Bush's speech on Thursday, Greens Senator Kerry Nettle said she had invited Mr Habib's wife and son as a protest against Mr Habib's detention for almost two years without charge by US authorities.

Mr Habib and fellow Australian David Hicks are being held at the Guantanamo Bay military base in Cuba as enemy combatants.

Parliament is closed to the public on Thursday morning for Mr Bush's visit, but MHRs and senators are each allowed two guests, who will be seated in the public gallery. "When President Bush is speaking, he is speaking not just to the Australian people, but directly to the wife and the son of an Australian who remains illegally detained in Guantanamo Bay," Senator Nettle said.

Prime Minister John Howard, who is in Bangkok for APEC meetings, said the Greens could invite whoever they liked, but stressed: "Guests have obligations of good behaviour like anybody else does."

Last week, Mr Bush said he would not be concerned by protests made in Parliament.

Mrs Habib said she would not cause a scene during Mr Bush's address, but urged the release of her husband.
