This is Holy Week all over the Christian world. In some places they really get into it, actors, costumes, whips etc. It`s interesting how often whips figure in these rituals. The Muslims too have devotees who whip themselves through the streets. In the Passion Plays that go all out Christ gets whipped for real, though not quite with as much fervor as would have been used originally…except for once in Mexico City.,

A delightful gentleman in his 80s told me last night of one such incident he witnessed when he was in his teens. There`s a part of Mexico City that`s famous for putting on the most realistic and detailed recreation of the Passion, as it`s called. It can be pretty cold up there this time of year yet they spare no detail…Christ goes barefoot with a torn robe and nothing else as the actors jeer at him and throw stones…real ones.

This year…as thousands of people from all over the country crammed the streets to witness this spectacle…the Roman centurion layed the whip on a bit thick. Christ it sems muttered something to the fellow under his breath..probably something like..”watch the fucking whip will you”? The Centurion shot something back…maybe, “Sure YOU get to be Christ”!!…and smacked him a harder one…a few more strokes on his back and Christ drops his cross and gives the Centurion what for..sort of like you wish he`d done back when. The two commence to shoving and cursing each other`s mothers…with the Virgin weeping nearby…and then they come to blows…with all the actors staring aghast and the audience maybe a bit perturbed as well.

As they don`t stop and no one knows quite how to intervene…the police finally take over and load Jesus and the Roman into a paddy wagon and throw them both in the drunk tank to cool off and sober up. The festival everyone has waited for is called off…Christ having behaved in a most un-Christian way. Or did he?
