Our boys in Iraq, the ones crying about how their rights were trampled upon regularly...how the country belongs to them...how the Muslims in Iraq are all Arabs from Arabia, now 1300 years old, and should go back where they come from...how the Christians of Iraq are the indigenous people by way of Jesus having been born in Israel...the insult to all Assyrians everywhere when they maintain our noble ancestors were hiding in the hills, terrified, until a single Jew walked over from Israel and gave them courage...all of this stuff is understandably unwelcome to the ear and in a country that has the oil America wants to steal, their added peculiar notion that the West will come save them, especially as the memory of the Levies levied by the last foreign Christian occupier, Britain, is still fresh in the government's mind...would make their presence up there in the hills a constant cause for concern. And all you have to do is watch them collaborate again with the next occupying force of Christian Crusaders to understand why Saddam kept a wary eye on them...a short leash on their "freedom" to call down destruction on Iraq and clapped several of them in jail and hanged a few...which shouldn't strike us so awful as we can see in any Christian enclave in Iraq our boys would be hanging the people they suspected and they wouldn't allow you to use purple in your paintings...unless you did it "right".

Let's re-visit those villages Saddam bulldozed. Our boys do the equivalent of play with fire, then run crying when they're burned...they stand out in the freeway and then come to you in shock and disbelief when several trucks run over them, needing medical care, wheelchairs and financial support from Narsai because they can no longer work...and all the time no one thinks to tell them to not lay down in the fast lane.

The villages he leveled...so we're told...were in the north along the border...and it was Christians on their borders that made Turkey nervous...especially with the Christian Crusaders massing on the other side and making their intentions known to the entire world...that Turkey was "sick" and should therefore be put out of its misery but the oil fields "saved", if at all possible. I don't see anything but caution and the usual license all presidents give themselves to behave in illegal and immoral ways when they say they feel their nation is threatened with attack...by terrorists or terrifying armies.

Our boys say that Saddam spied on them...well I would have too, as I am sure we all know by now that half the memebership of any suspect organization is made up of government spies and agents...where's the great shock in that?. He had to know where their loyalties were, though why he felt the need to check first before taking action against them, I don't know...certainly they made no secret of their feelings. His spies would have told him that in several churches there were people who were whispering about being Saved from dirty Muslim rule by "Liberating" Christian armies from the West. As those villages have nothing to spit in except a church...makes sense they would gather there to drink tea and gossip and it also makes sense, as the church is being used for more than "worship" that you'd topple it and send them all out to live under trees so they'd be too busy finding food and not have the leisure time or meeting place from which to prepare the way mentally and with God's help to welcome the invading Crusaders...again!

There are always village idiots in villages and no doubt Peter and Aprim and Firas were up there talking about facts and history and all the times Muslims killed Christians and Peter was handing out poetry...so no wonder they bulldozed the village and hanging Peter would only have improved him.

When you are under attack or fear of attack...you don't set up commissions to study everybody in a village to determine who is the culprit or potential traitor...not to a name but to your country...in America anyone dark or hairy, or Arab-looking, with or without a ten pound cross round his or her neck, was presumed guilty or potentially guilty and was treated accordingly and quickly enough there was relgious repression because women were not allowed to wear chadoors...in violation of evey legal principle we have. Years ago Americans of Japanese ancestry were all rounded up and jailed for the same reason...they MIGHT be POTENTIAL weak spots in the nation's defense and during our last Terror phase totally innocent Americans were hounded form work and ruined and several committed suicide because the government was hunting for potential traitors, though it never found a single active card carrying member of the Communist Party...just persecuted a lot people for exercising their legal rights as American citizens while most of them were college students.

Saddam had ample precedent to go by.

And today there are still people rounded up and jailed without any charges against them who can neither see family nor legal counsel...and this is not happening in an Iraq filled with Muslims but our own dear United States, filled to bursting with Christians...home of the Rule of Law, Liberty and all those other things we've had the time, leisure and education to develop and refine...if we came unglued...imagine how much more nervous Saddam, or the Sultan, was.

I'm not condoning anything...but it's good to try to understand your world rather than thrash around in it, flailing your arms and legs wildly with license to shoot first and look for WMDs later...especially when YOU own all the WMDs in the world and don't hesitate to fire on wedding parties.
