I've been trying to figure out if Iraq is a backwater...if nothing that happenes there is really of any significance in the larger picture of things. It certainly could have seemed so in Germany in 1936...that nothing of any world-wide significance was starting up...who was Hitler really and hadn't Germany just been trounced in the First World War and wasn't their economy in shambles..and how was the treatment of gypsies and Queers and that old stand by, the Jews, going to impact the world. Then there's the nagging question of at what point did Jews...and anyone else for that matter, realize that this was different..that these were new forces or old ones with a significant twist and one should either run away as fast as possible or start fighting back...even though you'd be hard put to it to convince people that this really was different...there REALLY were bad things coming.

I suppose you could start at the Spanish Civil War when the Germans came to the Royalist's side even though they had been told not to develop a military capabaillity that would allow them to go help another country in their civil war. Then there were the Communists and the fact that Capitalists came so unglued they looked on the Nazis as a necessary eveil because at least they were against communism...and the fact that Communism was seen as a Jewish plot sort of tied all the hatred of Jews and then of Communists together in a very appealing package...

Looking back for some signs that something unusual was starting I suppose the fact that American citizens..intellectuals and farmers and factory hands left the security of their own country to go fight for the socialists in Spain...the fight against budding Fascism is some sign that people who didn't need to were willing to risk their lives far away from their homes for more than just an ideal...but because they saw that Spain was the first testing ground for new world Fascism...something they must have thought was worth risking their lives to strangle in its cradle.

Then there's the Holocaust...when advanced European nations, and not just Germany, actually made it okay to trash their own Laws to go after an entire religion and kill every an, woman and child they could lay their hands on. There were signs all over the place that something unprecedented was taking place...like the spectacle of the boatload of Jews Hitler sent out to find refuge in any country that cared to take them..people who were not criminals, who in many cases were professionals, law-abiding citizens and their families, parents and children, who would have bee an asset anywhere and eternally grateful to anyone who took them in..and no one would, including the United States, which just a few decades later would claim to be a "slave to Israel". Those innocent civillians found no compassion anywhere and were forced to return to Germany where they were all murdered.

People accept anything that goes on around them if enough of them do it first...accept things that you know damn well are wrong...screamingly wrong, things that go against every ideal and principle they hold dear..things you know damn well they wouldn't want done to themselves or their children..but are presented in auch a way by authoroty figres they have been conditioned to fear if not respect...and so enough go along till critical mass is reached and everyone is swept away and out of their senses...everyone becomes insane because his or her neighbor is and they've elected or accepted an insane government that's strong enough now to silence and punish all opposition.

What's happened in Iraq is also unprecedented, is also goes againt every principle we hold dear...has also been the justification used for trashing our Laws and for breaking every international law as well. Then as now we've been given fantastic justifications making it almost seem like a godly duty to commit some of the most beastial crimes we ever contemplated...and not in defense of ourselves...but merely because we were told to...that it's okay and expected of us...and again we've been too afraid to speak up as if we know this is too horrible to oppose, that the world has lost its senses and we don't want to be the ones to stand in its way...yet we also know what history taught so well...that when you unleash this much injustice and vioence...you will NOT escape in the end.

There were signs recently that we were embarking on strange and dangerous waters. The biggest of these was the calm announcement by our government, by a woman official no less, that the United States had a policy that would lead to the death by starvation and other means once reserved for mad Nazi scientists, of 5000 innocent children a month UNDER the age of five. That such a thing could even be contemplated...and put forth as a policy intended to FORCE distraught parents to rise up against their own government...to do the bidding of the very people who would kill their babies, a government that at the same time posed to all the world as the friend of the poor Iraqi citizens and a champion of Freedom and Liberty and Democracy...tells you something of where we have come. Like the telling fact Moore points out that after invading Iraq Bush didn't even BOTHER to plant fake WMDs or lie about finding them, seems like there was a conscious effort made to see how far they could go...how willing to join in a murderous pogrom, this time directed against "evil" Islam, Americans AND the world would be...to sort of gauge how far and where else they might go and get away with murder of a new kind.

I hope...we should all hope, that one day we will ALL admit the horrible crimes that were committed by us or allowed to stand and go unchallenged...because if we don't we will have created a new standard of measure for what is "policy" in this country...if we bury it deep in our subconscious...if we refuse to teach it in our history books...if we never want to mention it again...the rot and poison we unleashed in the world might become another stepping stone...a new launching pad for all sorts of horrors we can't begin to imagine...as we never would have imagined during the heyday of the Vietnam War protests and the heady notion that we the people had corrected our government, that we'd one day, real soon, be justifying yet another war on innocent civilians nowing AT THE TIME that we had been lied to by our government...and that we would, in a mere thirty year's time be accepting a "policy" that would kill one third, or 500,000, as many innocent children as the Nazis did...in just as brutal a fashion and against all human laws and laws of common decency.

What has begun in Iraq could be more significant than what started in Berlin...and it could change us and our world and our country more profoundly than the Nazi terror and the ultimate damage and murder it brought to our entire planet. Iraq may not be a backwater at all...it could be the first in a series of wars that will lead us into a huge quagmire we will forever after be left wondering..."How in the name of all that's decent and right and in the name of our children did we EVER get here"?
