The issue was a political one between Cyril of Alexandria and Nestorius of Constantinople.Cyril wanted to exert his influence over the Orthodox Church and his only rival was Nestorius.


"When complaint was made to Nestorius he defended Anastasius and the controversy became embittered. As it raged in the capital city, other churches intervened, opposition to Nestorius being stirred up by Cyril the Patriarch of Alexandria. At length the Emperor intervened and a general council was held at Ephesus in 431 at which Nestorius was deprived and excommunicated. But many Syrians disapproved of this decision, repudiated the council, and separated from the orthodox Church. These separatists were known as Nestorians".


Again the author of this book is presuming that the Christian Syrians(a name given to all Assyrians who followed Christianity) attended Ephesus 431 which isn't true concerning the Christians of Mesopotamia who were part of the Parthian kingdom at the time and Ephesus was part of Byzantium,as such they were not able neither to travel nor to send a delegation,but because the view of the Church was close to that which Nestorius supported that is calling the Virgin Mary,mother of Jesus rather than mother of God,this gave Cyril and his group a leverage to brand the Church of Mesopotamia as "Nestorian" which is erroneous and still used today erroneously.The Church of Mesopotamia(The Church of The East) never followed Nestorius nor was a part of that conflict but was implicated for political reasons and conflicts over dogma.

It's a well known fact that the schools of Nisibin and Edessa were in the same stature as what some of the largest universities are today.This also didn't sit well with the followers of Cyril and those who supported him and their aim was to control these two schools for their importance,the two schools exchanged hands and were controlled for some time by the Jacobites(syrian orthodox) who shared the Monphysite rite just like the Greeks,Ethiopians and Armenians.
