COBURN MUST ANSWER FOR MEDICAID FRAUD ALLEGATIONS
Statewide and National Reports Claim Coburn Cheated Oklahoma Tax Payers by Knowingly Committing Medicaid Fraud
Jay Parmley (405) 427-3366

Oklahoma City, OK -- Jay Parmley, Democratic Party Chair, today called on Dr. Tom Coburn, Muskogee doctor and United States Senate candidate, to answer allegations made by statewide and national news reports that he cheated the taxpayers of Oklahoma by knowingly committing Medicaid fraud. The Tulsa World reported today, along with national stories in both the Washington Post and the New York Times, that Dr. Coburn committed Medicaid fraud in a case where he sterilized a young woman without her consent.

“The allegations made today against Dr. Coburn raise serious questions about his ability to serve as our next United States Senator,” said Parmley. “Dr. Coburn’s comments in today’s Tulsa World directly contradict what he said under oath during his deposition. We call on him to answer these questions truthfully and honestly because the voters of Oklahoma deserve the truth.”

The Tulsa World today reported, along with the Washington Post and the New York Times, that during a medical procedure 14 years ago Dr. Coburn performed a unauthorized sterilization of a young women (which is required through written consent by law), and then illegally billed Medicaid by omitting the sterilization procedure. All reports detail Dr. Coburn’s own deposition where he admits that he omitted the procedure in order to get paid for the claim. Reports further claim through Dr. Coburn’s own admission that he ordered the young woman to “keep quiet” about it in order to cover it up.

“The people of Oklahoma deserve to be represented in the U.S. Senate by someone who is honest and forthright – and who practices what he preaches,” said Parmley. “Tom Coburn holds his moral character in high regard and we hope that he will live up to this standard. Oklahomans expect their leaders to be accountable and held to the highest standard.”
“Tom Coburn admitted under oath in his deposition that he committed Medicaid fraud. He is being smeared only by his own sworn testimony from his deposition. And only he can clarify his own actions.”
