shlomo Farid,

No, my last name is not arsLan, it's Arsan , without an "l".

Arslan or Aslan means " Lion" in turkish and old-turkish ( ottoman turkish). But many Assyrians got the name "Aslan" or "Arslan", especially those who were village-chiefs. My own uncle who is from the same bloodline got the last name "Aslan" because he was the Mukhtar/Village chief.

Turkey's policy was to turkify all the peoples within it's borders. The last names, the village names ( my village is Arbo, but in turkish it is registered as Tas-Koy), even non-turkish first names were not allowed.

My last name "Arsan" is derived from the regional origine of our family tribe who were from the region of the river Arsania. One of my forefathers was named after this river ( like in the story of Bar Daysan, the assyrian filosofer of Urhay/Edessa/Urfa, named after the river Daysan in the city of Urhay).

You remind me of Bar Daysan. :-) This guy was in the beginning a heathen assyrian, later a christian priest and at the end he seemed to have rejected the christian faith again and preached filosofy of higher level. Mar Aprim, the wellknown saint burned the majority of his books, the greatest mistake of this saint.

Matay
