Rhetoric, rancor

I want to express appreciation of Luz Perez's June 22 letter. Perez's response is a civilized approach that I appreciate. I do agree with Perez on many points but there is a great deal of tacit misunderstanding. The word "hate" has seemingly become modus operandi for many, even in inappropriate contexts. Telling the truth is not "hate." Recalling an occurrence from my life experience is to me a reality.

Concealing facts might make things look nice, but surely would not help make things any better. "Tell the truth even if it goes against yourself," is an Islamic dictum. Ask any Muslim.

I assure you that I have no slight "hate" and have never intended to offend anyone. Many of my best lifetime friends are Muslims. I am nostalgic about my childhood when Muslim families used to stay in our house for days and weeks. As kids, we had fun and shared the same bread and beds. My parents had close relationships with dozens of Muslim families. As their child, I grew up nourishing same spirit of love and mutual respect. Those relationships have been maintained until this moment. This beautiful reminiscence of my life is another reality. Every medal has its reverse.

I agree that it is regrettable that media are coloring attitudes. Equally so, hostile rhetoric harbors rancor. I call on readers to ponder samples of the Arabic rhetoric and read the human rights record of regimes in the Middle East.
