This week's Zinda magazine issue discusses the new constitution in Iraq, and the quibbling going on between Assyrians, Chaldean-Assyrians, and Syriacs regarding our separate but equal identities. This identity crisis will cost us more than just unity - it will ultimately cost us our livelihood in Iraq.

...you only just noticed? If the Kurds are divided into two factions they are still of ONE religion...you people used to be of one religion...but now you are 300 sects of a religion that was NEVER a part of us...and you wonder?

The Shi'ites are getting their way

...you can thank America for that... and your own calls for a democracy in such a nation...why are you surprised now?

- they are working to get Sharia law implemented permanently in Iraq. Assyrian women and men will have to live under Sharia law - Christians will have to follow Islamic law and live in accordance with only the freedoms that Islamic law allows them. This is absolutely unacceptable.

...then why did you ask America to go to Iraq...why did you want democracy in Iraq?

We are all elated that Saddam Hussein and the evil Ba'athist regime is gone

...you might be but Iraqis, including the Christians are NOT elated...they are the ones who are suffering for real...while you all don't like the "idea".

- but to be replaced with what? An Islamic government - something that Iraq has NEVER had before - that does not allow freedoms for religious minorities?

...Saddam allowed those freedoms...he denied them to the SHIIA and kept the Kurds in line! It wasn't a Kurd who was foreign minister...it was a Christian...a Kurd didn't run all of Iraq's museums...a Christian did...it wasn't Kurds who owned liquor stores, in defiance of Shiia law..it was Christians. The Christians of Iraq would have far prefered a steady, slow growth in freedoms...it was YOU...safely out of it that yammered for a quick fix...and now you have it and it looks like you fixed YOURSELVES again...not only have you never forgotten Simele...you never learned anything from it either.

The Kurds are fighting for independence in their provinces in the North, and also asking Kirkuk to remain in their control (something that will likely happen) - meanwhile we cannot even organize under one name in order to demand we are treated equally and fairly under the law.

...look back at what you just wrote...specifically TWO words...one was used to apply to what the Kurds are doing and that word is FIGHT...the other refers to what YOU do and that is DEMAND...see any difference?

Enough is enough - our IMMEDIATE problem is not a name - it is civil and religious freedom. We need to unite under ONE name - Chaldo-Assyrian, and move from there

...in ONE sentence you can't even unify your thoughts...you start out saying your immediate problem is "not a name"...and you end by saying, "we need to unite under ONE name"...you can see from there why you're in the toilet.

- the details of the name and our identity can come in time. Without basic freedoms in place and our lives protected - what is our name worth? Absolutely nothing.

...you got that right. You changed your name from Assyrian to Christian...and under that name you have become, in your own words, absolutely nothing.

...you HAD all those basic freedomes under Saddam...you will never see them again under "democracy" in this kind of Iraq...and it will get WORSE.

I know many are uncomfortable with the name, some may even despise it. But with such an urgent need for survival in an Islamic land, sacrifices must be made - Assyrians have sacrificed their lives for our name,

...YOU have sacrificed THEIR lives for your NAMES.

now, we need to compromise on our name so we may save our lives. Assyrians are not for lack of strength and pride - it is time to do the right thing.

...it's way past that time...you're complaining about your burial plot and the name on your tombstone..it's a bit late for that don't you think? let me guess...I am "negative" and I just "insulted" you...and what you have said here is a sign of "pride and strength"...right?

Please, urge your family, friends, church groups, youth organizations and the elders in our community to agree to the most important thing facing Assyrians today - our survival.

...that was your line when calling for this war.

..you can all agree to ONE name...or ONE HUNDRED...you have 60,000 to 100,000 LESS Christians than you had before...under ONE name you will be able to do the same nothing you ever did...there will be NO Christian official with any real power ever again...and NO Christian will be in charge of Iraq's antiquities...the Shiia can now freely "rewrite your history"...something else you just made possible...good going...but don't despair...there will be a glut of "martyrs" on the market...that's what your "pride" always comes down to in the end.
