Shlomo,

Thanks for your response.

...a pleasure to find the doors and windows open here...

I do get what you mean, 100 percent. I truly do.

...I believe you.

But as David Perley once said ...

...I'm willing to listen to any words of wisdom...but he was a church member and Assyrians had their own religion...but let's hear what he had to say...

“When a person is of Assyrian blood, he retains his birthright, self-esteem, and the heritage of his fathers.

...I have a problem with "blood"...I don't understand the concept...neither did I understand what "Black" blood was...these ideas come from a time when Fascism was popular...I think the idea of blood purity or blood membership has been pretty well discredited.

...In their own time the Assyrians accepted EVERYBODY...they didn't care what blood you had...what god or where you came from...if you joined them in building civilization, you became one of them.

The term Assyrian is one single unity. The approachness of this oneness of all Assyrians regardless of their relgious adherence, is through the avenue of blood, and through the majesty of common memories.

...there is no common bond in blood between anybody. There might be something in DNA...but never where a "nation" is concerned. If you are willing to discount their religious beliefs and remembering that Assyrians were never Christians till much later, if at all...then any religion at all...including Islam, is posible for an Assyrian...

..that being the case we need to look elsewhere for what might distinguish an Assyrian in the modern era...before we do that you have to make up your minds...are we talking about "Assyria" as the concept existed when it WAS an Assyria...or do we mean the more modern concept of what a nation is? You can't have it both ways...you can't leap into a past that didn't include monotheism and insist that an Assyrian MUST be monotheistic...and also that he MUST be exclusively Christian...not if you are going to next demand that you be accorded consideration as a "nation" today...NO nation today is determined by "blood"...not even by DNA...all true nations include as equal members people of ALL religious faiths, race etc.

...The one thing they all demand is loyalty to the country...the citizens of a modern state can do as they please...except they must NOT call for an attack on their homelands...even if they are Afro-Americans DRAGGED to America, enslaved, raped and forcibly converted to Christianity...they can still never use their legitimate anger at the the government to rebel...preach sedition or invite military action against their country...neither can they ask anyone to come save them...if they seek to improve their lot then they will have to do it within the limits and through the avenues allowed them BY their country...to do it any other way is treason...

...In that case...those who asked for this war and seek to profit from it, in ANY way...Christian OR Muslim...are enemies to Iraq and are being dealt with in an appropraite manner...as would any American who took up arms on behalf of a country attacking his own, no matter HOW noble sounding were the reasons for such a war...surely that takes no great effort to understand.

...The PEOPLE of Iraq...regardless of religion...as you point out...who are WORKING for the defense of Betnahrain against ANY attacker of ANY religion are the only legitimate desecendants of the Assyrian, Babylonian, Chaldean and any other people of the land...and regardless of blood or DNA OR religion...anyone who asks for, supports, aids in and seeks to benefit in any way from this 20 year illegal and most inhumane war against the people of Iraq...ALL the people of Iraq...is a traitor to the country and will get exactly what traitors have always gotten...they certainly will NOT get any guarantees they'd enjoy.

Religion is a faith aquired and is changeable. Nationality is one's flesh and blood; it is his total nature. Even death cannot undo it.

..Nationality derives from your membership in and to a nation...it can be conferred on you by a court or other government official, you can be born to it or naturalized...again you are resorting to a mystical definition that no longer exists anywhere...this is now...not long ago.

..I agree that religion is immaterial and that all those NOT of the Assyrian faith...which is the faith in ASHUR and not some other god...can also be members of the "Assyrian" ideal..if you prefer...but their fitness for such citizenship will be determined as it is for what qualifies all people as members of all nations today...which is their BEHAVIOR and how it accords with the basic, and commonly agreed upon definition of good citizenship...something the majority of these armchair "Assyrians" LACK.

What binds us as a Nation, as an Assyrian nation... All jacobites, chaldeans, and nestorians etc. is "our blood and our common memories and history", not relgion or language. I feel that Assyrian is inclusive of all our people. Any other term, including christian or chaldo-Sssyrian are exclusive terms which seek to split our nation intentionally or not.

...this "nation" has been splitting and fracturing since it left the unifying authority and inspiration of Ashur...as you can readily see the many Jews who converted to Christianity were lost to yahwe. Once that first betrayal occured...what's to stop such people from splitting again and again...each of them looking for their one TRUE god...when they turned their back on him long ago.

As a rhetorical question:

What does a jacobite from tur abdin, a nestorian from urmia, a chaldean from nineveh, and an Assyrian who was protestant but really doesnt believe in jesus all have in common?

...none of them follow the god of the Assyrians any longer...which they also share with Assyrian Muslims.

For the record, my answer an what I believe as 100 percent truth = They are all Assyrian!

...if they are...then so are Muslims in the MidEast...for their religion shouldn't bar them...if we're going to forgive Christians their inconctancy as Assyrians...why do we damn Muslims?

..those who are fighting FOR Betnahrain and against its oppresors are today's Assyrians...those who see a "bright golden opportunity" for their jew God in all this misery are no Assyrians.
