A Nation of Infidels?

I was shocked following the attack by Hezzbollah on Israel to begin to get in my email box a flood of shocking articles and messages
by fellow Assyrians.

What amazed me most of all was the flurry of anti-Israel messages and what could only be seen as support for the terrorist
organization Hezzbollah.

While there would be daily updates quoting obscure reports of Israeli sins, not a word on Hezzbollah firing missles from behind
homes, the UN compound and firing Katusha rockets by the thousands into Israel.

Not knowing how to respond, I asked many of those sending the messages to explain to me how an Assyrian Christian could be against
Israel and also at the same time support a radical moslem terrorist organization like Hezzbollah.

Frankly, I was not prepared for the rash of `hate mail` directed at me from fellow Assyrian!

It was one thing, though to find out that there were Assyrians who seemed to love and support radical moslem organizations and
attack Israel, but quite another thing when the discussion turned to another arena – the Bible itself.

As any Assyrian knows the historic promise to Assyrians that one day their will be an Assyrian Nation comes from Isaiah 19:23-25
which states:

`In that day there will be a highway from Egypt to Assyria . . .in that day Israel will be the third, along with Egypt and Assyria,
a blessing on earthy . . . Assyria my handiwork . . .`

No matter how one reads it, it is clear that Israel and Egpyt are the friends of Assyria and part of our alliance.

I am sure you can imagine my increased shock to receive note such as `I say that several Chapters of the Old Testament were taken
from Mesopotamian mythology` or `The Old Testament is a political magazine. ` And more. `

What I was not prepared for was first, the rash of anti-Israel and pro-Hezzbollah language, followed by attacks on the Bible itself.

An Assyrian and anti-Christian? Is such a thing possible?

Finally, was the third part of this bizarre worldview – a blatant anti-Americanism?

I must admit I am throughly confused.

First, as to why even one Assyrian would support the same people who massacred my own family and whom I can remember 60 years after
it happened my own grandfather waking up in the middle of the night screaming the terror of it was so bad.

The same people who so destroyed our village in Northern Iraq that when I went in place of a Church was a huge mosque and destroyed
homes - nearly 90 years later!

How can an Assyrian support Hezzbollah, Hamas or any moslem organization that is today doing not only to our people, but to Israel
the same thing they did to us for generations.

Second, how does an Assyrian not believe in the Bible? I do not understand? How can an Assyrian be against Israel? The prophecy in
Scripture is very clear that in the day that Assyria once again becomes a nation it will be in alliance with Israel and Egypt.

Then, finally, how can an Assyrian be anti-American? The country that not only has taken us in, loved us, given us freedom and gone
to war to liberate our people, albeit many problems in Iraq.

I am devoid of answers. The only things I can think of are first the `Stockholm Syndrome` or as I call it the `Minority Syndrome`
where the abused identify strangely with the abuser.

A victim of abuse develops a strange bond with the person that is abusing him or her and defends what is really their shame.

Next, though is the curious anti-Christian strain that I have received in many, many messages. `How can an Assyrian be
anti-Christian` I have been asking myself.

Frankly, I am out of answers!

If in fact, though this avalanche of hate mail I have received is in fact a reflection of even a small percentage of the Assyrian
community, then dream is over.

It means that the Assyrian nation has succumbed to the final stage of its own destruction – the repudiation of its own faith and
identifying with its enemy.

It is the faith that believes in the promise that provides the bedrock foundation for the Nation. Repudiation of the Bible itself
and its promises signal the end of the promise.

Support for the precise people whose hands are stained with the blood of our nation is an equal sin.

At the same time, I have been encouraged by some who have said to me, `they are just a very tiny minority. `

I hope it is so.

Will someone tell me what the reality is?

When asked why one could not still be an Assyrian and not believe the Bible I responded with a simple response `can you be a Moslem
if you don’t believe the Koran? Can you be a Jew if you don’t believe the Talmud? Can you be a Buddhist if you don’t believe
in Buddah?`

It is just common sense! Of course you cannot. If you do not believe in the Bible – the foundation of your hope and identity and
support the descendents of those who slaughtered our nation than you have no right to call yourself an Assyrian.

If in fact the Assyrian nation has become a nation of infidels then it is clear to me why in spite of so many opportunities there is
still not an Assyrian Nation.

Just like in the time of Nineveh, a loss of faith and support for those whose hands are stained with our blood is a signal of
destruction.

Will somebody please show me I am wrong?
