Stephen Harper, Prime Minister

Canada

Cher Premier ministre,

:I wanted to express my deep sorrow over your false comments to the Canadian people concerning the Hizbollah activities which allegedly provoked Israel’s campaign of utter and complete destruction in Lebanon.

In the past several decades, I have cherished my visits to Canada, I have great esteem for my many Canadian friends who live in all regions of your wonderful country, and I have always had admiration for the socially humane approach which comes from Ottawa and is all too often missing from the U.S. system.

I consider Canada to be entrusted as the beacon of truth and rectitude, a role which apparently my own country cannot play well because it is busily engaged in playing bully in the world. Rightly or wrongly, a country’s conscience is judged by the statements of its elected leaders. Is it possible that the righteous Canadian electorate knowingly would elect a puppet figure to sing Bush’s tune about warmaking? Is it possible that when electing you, the level-headed Canadians would put in office someone who is now competing with John Howard of Australia and Tony Blair of Britain, to see which will stoop the lowest or jump the highest, depending on Washington’s bidding? Are you the new American guignol on the stage?

I realized in my last visits to Ontario that while your media is generally good, it must also bear a cross for the sludge put out by such anomalies as the propagandist National Post. Yet I do not understand why you would flat-out mischaracterize the events which preceded the annihilation of Lebanon. Hizbollah is a social and military organization. In a military operation, it assaulted an Israeli lookout station, captured two soldiers and killed two (or three) others. This was not the first time such taking of Israeli prisoners had occurred, and in the past it was certainly not a magical casus belli. In fact, there had been prisoner exchanges between Hizbollah and Israel before. At no point in time during this operation did Hizbollah fire off rockets into Israel. Such rockets were fired only in riposte to the Israeli bombardments of Lebanon. It is a shame that a man of your education would disregard the facts, for surely you would have known this. I can only extrapolate that your motive was opportunism, and apparently members of the Canadian political class can be as venal as those in other countries.

If it is your position to simply parrot the unvetted rantings of our inarticulate President, then you are taking your country down a path of mediocrity, and selling out the hallowed Canadian tradition of independence and justice.

Israel is often guilty of human abuses and violations of international law. One would hardly know this from the statements which issue from your office. I had hoped that the Canadian Prime Minister, of all people, would respect the facts, even if it is considered politically risky.

Francis Sarguis, Esq

Santa Barbara

P.S. I am still a great admirer of Canada, and regrettably I cannot say the same for its current political head.
