Reynolds faces court date in Colorado

By The Associated Press 03/16/2006

RAPID CITY (AP) -- Former Edgemont area rancher John "Chance" Reynolds has been returned to Colorado to face a charge of escaping from a federal prison there seven years ago.

Reynolds was caught Feb. 17 near Ajijic, a small town near Guadalajara, Mexico, where he and his family had been living. Mexican authorities deported him to Los Angeles.

He made an initial court appearance in Denver on Monday, according to David Floyd, supervisory deputy U.S. marshal at Denver.

A detention hearing was set for Thursday, at which time Reynolds could be arraigned or arraignment could be set for a later date, Floyd told the Rapid City Journal.

Reynolds, 53, is being held without bond at the federal detention center in Englewood, Colo., Floyd said.

Reynolds had borrowed $17 million from Farm Credit Services of America as well as hundreds of thousands more from other West River area banks, businesses and individuals to finance expansion of his ranch in southwest South Dakota and eastern Wyoming.

Reynolds later admitted that he inflated cattle numbers to get loans.

A Farm Credit official said last month that the bank had recovered all but $2 million of its money.

Reynolds and his family disappeared on March 24, 1996, the day before bank inspectors closed in to check his collateral.

He was indicted on fraud charges a few weeks later and was arrested in February 1997 in South Lake Tahoe, Calif.

In September 1997, he pleaded guilty in federal court to two counts of making false statements to financial institutions and one count of illegal money transactions.

In January 1998, he was sentenced to seven years in prison and began serving his sentence later that year at a federal minimum security prison at Florence, Colo. He disappeared from the prison on March 14, 1999.
