...Iraq, Egypt, Syria and Jordan, I think...joined together to oust the Christian imposed occupation of European Jews, which the Christians hadn't managed to cook and eat. They would use the MidEast as the next phase of their "final solution".

My father was stationed somewhere in Palestine with the army. Miles of dessert separated the Israeli and Arab forces...there were skirmishes...attacks at the front...shifting positions etc.

One day they took a young Israeli prisoner. He was slightly wounded and sent to the hospital where my father cared for him. War being what it is, they decided to interrogate the prisoner. Each day a squad would come for him and return him hours later... limp and bleeding...bruised and most often unconscious. My father was told to fix him up so he could be interrogated some more the next day. This went on for several days..with some time off to allow the prisoner to recover...so they could do it to him all over again.

My father got to know the fellow...turned out he was a medical student...rather cultured. they chatted in the spare time...all the while my father was patching him up knowing he'd be beaten and tortured all over again..and again.

In all honesty I have always had a hard time crediting what happened next...but that's because I, like most of us, live in a world with small people in it..most often reduced to petty pursuits, fearful of their daily bread...and in our case inundated by fools passing themselves off as heroes. We forget that somewhere there is the real article.

My father decided he could no longer play his part...he was a part of the torture of this young man..a fine fellow with parents and sweetheart...someone whose world had been turned inside out, not by any Muslims, but by the same Christian dogs who were now "allied" with the Jews they tried only recently to cook and eat.

Late one night he dressed the Israeli in a heavy army overcoat, bundled him into a motorcycle sidecar and drove him out of the camp, towards the Israeli lines. Some miles short, he placed the fellow on the roadside...left some water and food with him...he'd already injected him with whatever he needed...then got back on the motorcycle...fired several shots in the air and beat it back to camp.

The prisoner was never found so undoubtedly a patrol found him and returned him to his unit.

He must have known whom he was dealing with because his superiors believed the man had escaped in the night...they never dreamed a Christian would risk a firing squad to help a JEW escape. Of course that prisoner could return to the fighting and perhaps kill sveral fellow Iraqis...I guess my father thought we were all fellow humans long before our passports got in the way.

note: This will remind grairs of his own father's calling as a ditch digger...or maybe water-boy. You can see what kind of a son he raised. This will NOT inspire grairs to go to college and improve himself in one of many many ways open to him..all of which he is in dire need of...instead he'll be true to his position in Life as the son of a dustman by calling those far above him all sorts of names...at least I hope he does. Come on, jackass...I've dared you to bend over.
