In Response To: The Text of Proposed Iraq Constitution (Peter BetBasoo)

Maybe it's not as bad as we think.

...sure.

Consider the following clauses:

...you can "consider" anything...what you CAN'T do is do anything ABOUT something.

1. Islam is a main source for legislation.

...as Christians would like to make their own Sharia everbody's source for legislation.

* a. No law may contradict Islamic standards.

...no law may be "un-Christian" in America.

* b. No law may contradict democratic standards.

...all that means, you idiot, is majority rule...doesn't matter WHO the majority is and whether or not YOU like them.

* c. No law may contradict the essential rights and freedoms mentioned in this constitution.

...right...like there never was Jim Crow and defacto segregation in America!

These seem to me to put checks and balances against Shari'a.

...sure they do.

Because "democratic standards" are necessarily defined by other sources, and article C (in conjunction with other parts of the constitution) effectively does away with the Dhimmi system.

...there was never any separate status for Christians in Iraq. There was special treatment, as spelled out in the Law, for dealing with those who used Jesus or archeology to claim someone else's lands or preach sedition.

I think you're thinking of America and Great Britain...where true dhimmies exist...besides, you're a dimwit...not a dhimmie.

...as much as you all go weak in the knees when you see the word "democracy" and "free speech"...obviously they are concepts you know nothing of. Free speech isn't speech controlled by YOU, instead of Saddam. And all democracy means is "majority rule"...nowhere, not in America or Britian, did democracy ever mean prtotection for minorities...especially not unpopular ones.

Also Article A says "Islamic standards", not Islamic law, and "standards" are much more open to interpretation.

...yes, but not by YOU.

Also, there is IMPLICIT recognition of "Assyrian areas" in Article Four.

...that won't matter so long as one Kurd is left alive to give the lie to your IMPLICIT hopes that someone will do something for you. The Kurds have been fighting for what America just gave them...with your stupid blessings, for centuries...they will NEVER give up one inch of the territory they WON and therefore deserve...deserve as much as America deserves the land IT stole.

...you never COULD look in a mirror without seeing Rock Hudson staring back.
