...those weren't "US bred horses"...they were Mexican horses and I bought them...every one...including the one he was riding when I ran the son of a bitch over. He is indeed erratic...but that too is an act. It's all an act. So, they are in Ajijic...that's by Lake Chapala outside Guadalajara...there's a large gringo population around the lake and at Ajijic...almanac says Ajijic has more days of sunshine than anywhere else on earth...wherever they went there'd have to be gringos...the ones disenchanted with the US government would be their best marks.

..this guy Bartini seems to still be under their spell...it isn't "their" magic that hoodwinks people...they know how to burrow into YOUR fantasies...the best con happens inside YOUR head...they are expert, or think they are, in planting the seeds...but soon their lies multiply and get out of all proportion...they are bound and determined to ruin whatever they set up for themselves...can't help but ruin it because they don't know when to stop lying...it's like a compulsive eater...each bite just makes the next bite all the more necessary because it isn't a REAL hunger that drives the person and so the food isn't really what you desire...in their case they had to add fantastic lie on top of fantastic lie to cover the awful insignificance they felt deep inside.

Ajijic huh?

Celina and Lew or Sam or Chance...know damn well they're fooling people...and that can't feel good...I mean it feels good to know you got away with it...but at the end of the day you have to be deeply dismayed to realize that all your "friends" and those whom you've attracted are only there because they don't REALLY know you. In the morning, when you wake and realize that everything around you is fake...you are compelled to set out all over again and try to win over some more and maybe more genuine friends...only you don't know how...don't know or are afraid to do the REAL work it takes, either to make a real business REALLY flourish..or get a REAL friend to really like you for what is REAL about you...and sure enough, by sunset you're left with the dismal realization that everything you "achieved" that day too is as fake and phoney as what you tricked out of people the day before...and so you're forced to do it again and again...and soon you find yourself making up absurd stories that become more and more improbable...so that eventually the ONLY "friends" you have left are the REALL stupid ones...and that hurts you even MORE...and before you know it you've crapped all around your campfire and are forced to move again...and again.

..and by the way, they don't really work either...I watched them for several months...the funniest was when they put shoes on the horses. Theey made it into a sort of religious ceremony...said no one should be around because the horses get nervous...if you were close by you had to stand or sit absolutely still...or the "mystery" of horse shoeing would be ruined...that was intended, of course, to make you bored quickly so you'd go do something else.

...I had a horse when I was in college...I even put shoes on her once or twice myself and I've been around when real cowboys shoe horses...I also watched when the Mexican I called in to shoe my horses was at work...there was no "mystique" to it...the guy would rope the horse...pat it and pet it a bit to calm it down..then get to work with no thought to how many people were watching...the guy even left the car radio on, blasting Mariachi music and old love ballads...horses remained calm and even the rowdy ones calmed down under the guy's expert care.

..in the end, Chance would fail every time because he'd eventually alienate all but the dumbest...and they weren't usually the ones who had much to offer him, besides dumb loyalty. They worked hard at CONNING people...and it may well have exhausted them by the end of each day...but it wasn't honest work.

..Our boys tire themselves out "building Assria" too...but it isn't REAL work either.
