I'm the author, so I'd thought I'd butt in. thanks jeff for sending this out. I hope that progressive Arabs/Chaldeans/whoever visits this cool site of yours has a mind to visit my site. My big goal was outreach. I teach English--literature, research writing, arab american studies, feminisms, --and am interested in reaching out to young people. I am still young too, but maybe not as young as some of you hip bloggers. here's my hope. we are not just sitting on our computers talking to one another, but that we get organized and mobilized. I am not saying you are not. you probably are, but we are doing our activism in isolation from one another.

I go to demonstrations against the war in Lebanon, for example or the war in Iraq (went to the DC demonstration in DC in 91, and here we go, I am trying to catch a ride for next weekend in DC,) and I don't see Chaldeans--at least not that I can tell, and I think I can 'tell.' So many Chaldeans I know would not go to a protest, would not stand up or speak out in solidarity w/ other folks of color. Even calling them colored would be an anathema. Chaldeans are dying to be white. Literally, death is what is happening. Ironically, the cultural preservationists and the Chaldean culture police (Shenandoahites) are the ones who want to maintain a tight ship on what it means to be Chaldean. What it means is dressing designer, building a house in bloomfield, gossipying and ruining people's reputations, worrying about how fancy your cellphone is. uh? death in Lebanon? those folks are all Hezbollah. really, are they? Lebanese, G. bless them, because I have a ton of Leb friends, are so into Arab denial ('we are phoenicians') and they'd rather speak French or English and they reminded me of Chaldeans so much when I visited this past xmas vacation. anyway, did their identification w/ the West and sometimes even loyalty to the Israelis 'pay off'? Being an Ammu Tomas does not pay off. you get smacked and humilated as you sell your soul. anyway, I rant.

let's start a conversation that leads to dialogue and maybe meeting one another or having "dialogue group" or a teach somewhere in our community. that would scare them, wouldn't it?
